The rebirth of “Alhondiga”
Alhondiga, the historic warehouse originally used for wine and oil storage and located in the noted Spanish city, Bilbao has been uniquely transformed.
Alhondiga is dedicated to leisure time and civic culture, designed by the prestigious French designer, Philippe Starck. Noteworthy, his concept nods to the past by retaining the original facade and few other details while implementing his characteristic modern and contemporary vision. Concentrating his full attention to the objective, to create a new cultural institute, his design has provided the inhabitants of the city recreational and cultural spaces with which to enjoy themselves.
Inside the building one finds gallery shows, pools, a solarium, meditation area, restaurants, artist studios dedicated to film and theater, a gym and an antique store.
In front of the building in Piazza Arrikibar, there are grand open spaces paved with 316 sqmt of a series of SICIS natural stone mosaic rugs reproduced in original scale. SICIS manufactured and supplied this project in only 7 days. The technical process used was Pixel, utilizing tessere sizes 2.3 x 2.3 cm in the following colors; Nero, Amarelo Marlena, Azul Marlena and Desert Pink, both in polished and Pietre Romane finishes.
